I have a number of students in kindergarten, first, and second grade who are working on consonant-vowel syllables and words. Some of them have characteristics of apraxia and some of them have had clefts repaired and we are working on consonants that require a build up of pressure. Several of them are also AAC users. Most of them are not excited to practice skills that are difficult for them. Last week I broke out the Grab and Go set with /p/ and /b/ CV words and my wooden box with a large slit in the lid. The engagement was amazing using these cards. The students picked a card from my fanned out offering, practiced the CV word, and then dropped it in the box. For one student, putting the card in the slit at an angle so it wouldn't fall in was the draw--it became a game where I modeled "stop" on his device (why did it stop?") and then "go" (when he adjusted the card so it would fall). Also, with these cards, I was able to determine which vowels worked best to elicit the production of the target consonants.
