Facilitative Contexts

What It Is

Facilitative contexts are environments or word structures that help a child produce a challenging sound more accurately.

For example, pairing a difficult /k/ sound with an easier neighboring sound—like in “back” instead of “cat” can support better placement and production.

How It Works

Certain sounds are easier to produce depending on what sound comes before or after. Therapy uses those contexts to help build or “facilitate” correct productions.

How We Can Help

We offer the Facilitative Contexts for /ɹ/ Therapy bundle with 89 cards targeting seven different facilitative contexts. The Prevocalic and Vocalic /ɹ/ deck and Coarticulation sets also support this method.

The Research

Facilitative contexts are an effective way to help children make accurate speech sound productions (e.g., McReynolds & Elbert, 1981). This strategy leverages coarticulatory contexts to enhance motor learning.
