Literacy

What It Is

Literacy includes the ability to read, write, spell, and understand written language. Foundational literacy skills begin early with phonological awareness, letter-sound correspondence, decoding, fluency, comprehension, and written expression. For many children, especially those with speech and language challenges, literacy doesn’t come naturally and needs explicit, structured instruction.

Identifying Issues

A child struggling with literacy might have trouble identifying sounds in words, rhyming, recognizing letters and their sounds, blending sounds to read, or spelling accurately. They may avoid reading altogether or become frustrated during literacy tasks. These challenges can affect academic performance and self-esteem, especially as reading demands increase with age.
