Complexity Approach
Sometimes, the most effective way to help a child learn something simple… is to start with something hard. The Complexity Approach is a research-backed method in speech sound therapy that flips the traditional strategy on its head, by targeting more complex sounds first to promote broader change.
The Complexity Approach targets more difficult or later-developing sounds and clusters first, helping children generalize to easier sounds.

How It Works
By focusing on complex sounds and clusters, the child’s phonological system is pushed to reorganize and adapt more broadly, leading to widespread improvement.

How We Can Help
Bjorem Speech® offers Complexity Approach decks targeting 2- and 3-element clusters. These materials are research-driven and easy to implement.

The Research
Gierut (2001) and subsequent studies have shown that treating complex targets leads to generalization across untreated sounds, accelerating phonological development.
