What It Is

Language encompasses both receptive (understanding) and expressive (speaking) abilities. It includes vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, storytelling, answering and asking questions, and understanding concepts.

Language is not the same as speech, children can have strong articulation skills and still struggle with the words and structures they need to express themselves clearly.

Identifying Issues

Children with language difficulties might have trouble following directions, answering questions, using age-appropriate vocabulary, understand literal and figurative language, forming complete sentences, or telling stories.

These challenges can affect academic success, social interactions, and confidence. Sometimes language delays are obvious, and sometimes they’re subtle, especially if a child finds ways to “mask” their struggles.
