What It Is

Morphology is the study of how words are built from the smallest units of meaning such as prefixes, suffixes, and base words. Teaching morphology helps students decode, spell, and understand complex words by recognizing meaningful word parts. As part of structured literacy and the Science of Reading, morphology instruction supports vocabulary growth, reading comprehension, and accurate spelling. It is especially powerful for students with dyslexia, English learners, and those ready to move beyond basic phonics.
