Every child deserves access to tools that empower their communication journey—no matter what language they speak.

The original Bjorem Speech Sound Cues have transformed how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) treat Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and speech sound disorders in English-speaking children. Now, we’re proud to expand this revolutionary approach to the Spanish-speaking community with the release of Los Estímulos de Sonidos del Habla.

Why Spanish Speech Sound Cues?

Millions of children speak Spanish worldwide, and additionally, many American children are raised in bilingual (Spanish-English) homes. Despite this, many therapy tools have historically been created only in English, leaving SLPs with limited options to support Spanish-speaking children effectively.

Los Estímulos de Sonidos del Habla bridges this gap. This deck was thoughtfully created by Martha Boiardt, M.S., CCC-SLP, a bilingual pediatric speech-language pathologist in Miami, FL, who works closely with bilingual communities of many Hispanic countries of origin. Drawing on her clinical experience and understanding of Spanish phonology, Martha adapted the original Bjorem cues to reflect the unique sounds, patterns, and needs of Spanish-speaking children, taking into account the dialectal differences that exist within the Spanish language.

What Makes This Deck Unique?

Just like the original Bjorem cues, the Spanish version uses engaging, child-friendly visuals and consistent cueing to help children learn, plan, and produce speech sounds more effectively. However, it is not just a translation—it is a culturally and linguistically tailored resource.

  • Developed with Spanish phonology in mind: This deck includes all Spanish speech sounds with cues that make sense in Spanish.

  • Supports bilingual intervention: Perfect for therapists working with children who speak Spanish or are bilingual in Spanish and English. There are unique cues in this deck that represent the differences in phonemes that are produced in both languages. For example, the original BSSC deck uses the Popcorn sound for the plosive /p/ sound in the English language, while the Spanish Estímulos uses el sonido de burbujas reventando to represent the unaspirated /p/ in the Spanish language.

  • Supports dialectal variations: Designed to represent the sounds produced in most Spanish dialects so that everyone who speaks Spanish can find a cue that works for them! For example, for the “ll” or “y” spelling, we have FOUR phonemes that can be used to represent this sound. Choose the one that works for you!

  • Evidence-based: Designed to support motor planning for children with CAS while respecting and celebrating linguistic diversity.

Who Is This Deck For?

This deck is a must-have for:

  • Speech-language pathologists working with Spanish-speaking clients

  • Parents seeking to support their child’s speech therapy at home

  • Universities training future SLPs to serve diverse populations
