Course Abstract

This three-hour course focuses on the treatment of Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) through evidence-based, movement-centered, and play-driven therapy. Building on the assessment and diagnostic framework from the first module, participants will learn how to plan and deliver therapy sessions that follow the Principles of Motor Learning (PML) and integrate Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) to improve speech accuracy, consistency, and prosody.

Through video demonstrations, discussion, and guided examples, participants will see how to move children through the DTTC cueing hierarchy, provide feedback that promotes motor learning, and select high-impact therapy targets that are functional, meaningful, and achievable. The course also explores how to engage children in therapy through play-based repetition, model coarticulation, and coach parents to support home carryover effectively.

By the end of the session, participants will have a clear, practical roadmap to begin planning and executing treatment sessions that foster real communication progress for children with CAS.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply the Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) hierarchy to promote accurate movement and sequencing for speech.
  2. Integrate the Principles of Motor Learning (PML) into therapy, including pre-practice conditions, practice organization, and feedback type and frequency.
  3. Select and prioritize functional, movement-based therapy targets and write appropriate, measurable goals for CAS intervention.
  4. Implement multisensory cueing strategies (visual, tactile, auditory, gestural, and metaphorical) that support accurate speech motor performance.
  5. Facilitate high-repetition, play-based therapy sessions that encourage movement success and support generalization.
