Course Abstract

This one-hour session provides a focused and practical overview of the key speech characteristics that define Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and how these differ from dysarthria and other speech sound disorders. Participants will learn to distinguish between discriminative and non-discriminative characteristics of CAS and understand how these features appear in real clinical contexts.

Through discussion and video examples, participants will explore how inconsistent errors, disrupted transitions, and prosodic differences contribute to diagnosis and treatment planning. Clinicians will walk away with a clear framework for observing, analyzing, and documenting CAS characteristics to improve diagnostic confidence and clinical decision-making.

Perfect for SLPs who are newer to CAS or looking to refine their observation and identification skills, this course simplifies the complexity of CAS into practical, usable knowledge you can apply immediately.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define Childhood Apraxia of Speech (CAS) and describe its core diagnostic features.
  2. Differentiate between discriminative (from non-motor speech disorders) and non-discriminative characteristics of CAS.
  3. Identify at least four hallmark characteristics of CAS through observation of speech samples or case examples.
  4. Recognize how characteristic patterns help distinguish CAS from phonological or articulation disorders.
